BEA1991 – “Almost A Lover”

Date:

Dutch-British audio-visual artist Beatriz de Rijke aka BEA1991 has consistently released singles over the past few months — “Tummy Bug,” “Saltworks,” and “Sex With Benefits.” She shared another one earlier this week called “Almost A Lover,” which is a dreamy rabbit hole of freak folk and trip-hop. Her voice sores high like a liberated balloon. Some moments remind me a bit of Moses Sumney. It’s all really delicate and lovely.

Turns out, the singles belong to a larger project called the 17:17 project that will include seven singles via her label be.aworld. “Almost A Lover” is the fifth single. She also shared some more insight on the new song:

This song is about and for Fako, an intimate childhood friend who decided to end (t)his life(time), December two years ago.

The song explores ways of supporting a decision like suicide since it’s the last authentic choice someone makes for themselves ~ and processing it with understanding and grace despite the deep grief and shock it brings to our inner worlds.

Questions around death, acceptance; losing, choosing, spiritually validating and traveling with other people’s decisions even when they hurt.

I hope this song brings you solice, warmth, perspective, a softening perhaps. I cried many warm tears while writing it and was grateful for the catharsis.

With my love and deep respect to the Buisman family ?
