Congress Councillor alleges Mayoral post sold for cash in Thrissur

Date:

Just before the mayoral election, open dissent erupted within the Congress in Thrissur, as Congress councillor Laly James publicly aired her dissatisfaction and made explosive allegations.

Laly James, elected as councillor from Lalur division, claimed that the mayoral post in the Thrissur Corporation was effectively sold in exchange for money, accusing the district party leadership of sidelining her because she did not have the required funds. Laly James won with maximum majority in the Thrissur Corporation in the election.

Laly James also levelled allegations against UDF mayoral candidate Dr. Niji Justin, questioning the manner in which the candidature was finalised. According to her, the decision was not based on merit or support within the party, but on financial considerations. Laly James alleged that Dr. Niji Justin personally approached party leaders with “cash box”.

She further claimed that the majority of elected Congress councillors had proposed her name for the mayor’s post, asserting that she enjoyed wider backing within the party ranks. However, despite this support, she was allegedly ignored due to her inability to pay, she said.

However, Congress’ official mayoral candidate, Dr. Niji Justin, denied the allegations. Responding to the controversy, she said the party leadership would give an appropriate reply to the charges raised.

The public disclosure has triggered a political storm within the Thrissur Congress, ahead of the mayoral election and placing the leadership under intense scrutiny. The party has sought explanation from Laly James.
