Woman’s Boyfriend Moves into Apartment, Won’t Split Rent 3 Ways

  • A Reddit user’s roommate “moved her boyfriend in” and refused to split the rent three ways
  • The person wondered if she was in the wrong “for suggesting the three-way split”
  • The frustrated user shared her dilemma and sought insight on the platform

A roommate is venting her frustration after her living situation changed, but her rent didn’t.

The frustrated roommate shared her dilemma in a post on Reddit’s “AITA” (“Am I the A——”) forum, seeking insight from users on the platform after the woman she lives with surprised her with an additional housemate — but no additional assistance with rent.

“AITA? I have a two-bedroom apartment with one of my good friends. We signed the lease together and planned to split the rent 50/50,” she began her post. But then, the OP (original poster) wrote, “My roommate moved her boyfriend in.”

With the addition of another person in the apartment, the OP wanted to change how the duo-turned-trio pays rent. It didn’t go over well.

The user said she feels as though she may be the “a——” in the situation, “because I suggested we should be splitting the rent evenly 3 ways with this change,” but both her roommate and the roommate’s boyfriend disagree.

Rather, the couple thinks that rent “should stay 50/50 since it’s still only two bedrooms, and they are sharing,” according to the post. The OP still begs to differ.

Seeking other people’s thoughts on the situation, the OP concluded the post, “Am I the a—— for suggesting the three-way split?”

While not everyone agreed that an exact three-way split is fair, as the OP suggested, it was practically unanimous that her frustration was valid — and that the boyfriend-roommate duo should definitely be paying more than half of the monthly rent.

“They might only be using 1 bedroom, but they are both still using utilities and common space as two people, not one,” wrote the user with the top-voted comment. “It’s fair for them to pay more. The rent should adjust accordingly as roommates come and go.”

In response, another person agreed, writing, “Exactly. It’s not just about the bedrooms — two people use more water, power, kitchen, and bathroom time. They’re already getting a good deal sharing a room. Splitting 50/50 isn’t really fair when it’s two against one.”

One person argued that an extra body using common spaces — especially the bathroom — is enough to warrant a change, writing that “you have to share the rest of the apartment too.” The roommate and her boyfriend “need to pay more just for the extra bathroom use,” they added.

“I’m gonna say NTA [not the a——], and here’s why. There’s more than just rent involved. There’s water, electric, food, and so on,” another person wrote. “You signed the lease in good faith, but is he listed on the lease now? That could bring issues with the landlord. Almost every lease I’ve had named all the occupants.”

Plus, they added, echoing other users, “They may have just one room, but there are two of them in the living room, kitchen and bathroom.”
