Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, black midi Guitarist, Dead at 26

Date:

Founding black midi guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin has died at the age of 26.

“It is with deep sadness that we as a family regret to inform you that Matthew Kwasniewski-Kelvin has died after a long battle with his mental health,” reads a statement posted by Rough Trade Records. “A talented musician and a kind, loving young man finally succumbed; despite all efforts. Matt was 26 years old.”

The statement continued, “He will always be loved. Please take a moment to check in with your loved ones so we can stop this happening to our young men.”

Kwasniewski-Kelvin met fellow black midi co-founders Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, and Morgan Simpson while attending London’s BRIT School.

Part of the influential Windmill Brixton scene alongside Black Country, New Road, Jerskin Fendrix, and Shame, the band released their debut album, Schlagenheim, in 2019. The record featured Kwasniewski-Kelvin on vocals for the track “Years Ago.”

black midi’s 2021 follow-up,  Cavalcade, was released without his contributions, with the musician later explaining he was taking time off to focus on his mental health.
