Azerbaijan has introduced a new regional train service that connects Ganja, the country’s second-largest city, to Gabala, a popular mountain resort known for its skiing resorts and breathtaking natural scenery. This new route marks the second regional train service in Azerbaijan that operates outside of the capital, Baku, as part of the nation’s ongoing efforts to improve transport connectivity and support regional tourism. The new service, operated by Azerbaijan Railways (ADY), began its operations on January 12, 2026.
Improving Travel Connectivity
Before the launch of this new train service, travelers wishing to reach Gabala from Ganja and vice versa had to rely mainly on buses or private cars, which often made the journey cumbersome and time-consuming. With the introduction of the new rail service, ADY aims to provide an efficient, comfortable, and more sustainable mode of travel for both locals and tourists alike.
This rail connection serves as a much-needed alternative to road travel, offering travelers a convenient and scenic way to reach one of Azerbaijan’s premier tourist destinations. With a travel time of approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes, the route spans 139 kilometers and provides a more comfortable and eco-friendly option compared to other forms of transportation.
Modern Trains Operate the New Service
The new route will be serviced by Stadler trains, which are manufactured by the renowned Swiss company Stadler. These modern, high-quality trains are designed to offer passengers an enhanced travel experience. The service will be available in four distinct classes: Standard, Standard+, Business, and First Class, ensuring that there is an option for various passenger needs and budgets.
The basic fare for the journey is 4.80 manats (approximately €2.45), making the service both affordable and accessible to a wide range of travelers. The fare structure offers an opportunity for both budget-conscious tourists and those seeking a more luxurious experience to travel comfortably between Ganja and Gabala.
Key Stations and Transfers
The new train service will stop at several key stations along the way, including Goran, Yevlakh, Laki, and Aghdash. For travelers wishing to continue their journey between Baku and Gabala, the train service provides an easy transfer at Laki station, which enables seamless connectivity between the capital and the mountain resort. This transfer system is particularly convenient for those wishing to travel directly to Gabala from Baku, or vice versa, without unnecessary delays or complications.
For example, travelers from Baku can take a train to Gazakh at 10:50 am, then transfer at Laki station at 11:12 am to board the Gabala-Ganja train service. For the return journey, passengers can board the Gabala-Laki service at 18:45, followed by the Gazakh-Baku train at 19:02, ensuring a smooth and efficient travel experience for all passengers.
