The Ontario International Airport (ONT) has achieved a major milestone through the introduction of its new monument sign, which serves as the first major marker of its ongoing transformation project. The visual landmark, which stands at the Archibald Avenue and Airport Drive crossroads, serves as a strong symbol of the airport’s renewed vitality and its dedication to future expansion, which marks the airport’s 10th year of local management.
A Monument to Transformation and Pride
The new monument sign replaces the airport’s previous understated sign, which had been in place since 1998. The bold new structure reflects the renewed energy, ambition, and sense of pride that defines Ontario International Airport today. Standing approximately 12 feet tall, the monument spans about 60 feet at its widest point, making an undeniable statement as visitors approach ONT.
The monument features the iconic “ONT” airport code, crafted from durable sheet metal and set against a backdrop of sculpted mountain forms inspired by the nearby San Gabriel Mountains. These mountain-inspired features symbolise the airport’s connection to its Southern California roots, reinforcing ONT’s strong sense of place and positioning it as a key regional gateway.
A Symbol of Local Ownership and Growth
The unveiling of the monument comes as Ontario International Airport celebrates the Decade of Local Control, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the airport’s transfer to local leadership in 2016. Since that time, ONT has undergone an extraordinary period of growth and innovation, becoming Southern California’s fastest-growing airport and a premier hub for domestic and international travellers.
Alan Wapner, the President of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) Board of Commissioners, remarked on the significance of the new monument, which stands as a bold testament to ONT’s transformation. For nearly three decades, the previous gateway sign had been barely noticeable to passersby, blending into the background. Today, however, the new sign boldly declares ONT’s identity and ambition, marking its re-establishment as a major player in the region’s airport scene.
Modern Design and Durability
Designed by Ontario-based Sign Industries, the monument is a fusion of modern aesthetics and durable materials. The “ONT” letters are crafted from robust sheet metal, ensuring the monument’s longevity, with the entire structure weighing over eight tons. Its concrete foundation guarantees that the sign will stand as a permanent fixture for years to come.
The design features a dynamic backdrop of layered peaks, echoing the San Gabriel Mountains, and is modular in construction, assembled directly on-site. LED light bars illuminate the sign at night, with the ability to change colours for holidays, special events, and community celebrations, further enhancing its role as a centrepiece for the local community and the airport itself.
A Powerful Statement for Southern California’s Gateway
This bold new monument signifies much more than just a physical landmark. It reflects the airport’s evolution under local control and serves as a beacon for ONT’s growing stature as a regional and international hub. The unveiling of the new monument is a moment of pride for Ontario residents and the broader Southern California community, reaffirming ONT’s role as a critical connector for travellers across the U.S. and beyond.
With its continued focus on customer satisfaction and economic growth, ONT is positioned to expand its reach in 2026, welcoming more travellers and forging stronger ties to global markets. The new monument is just one visible sign of the airport’s ongoing transformation, a symbol of the ambitious goals ONT continues to pursue.
The Future of Ontario International Airport
Ontario International Airport’s journey over the last decade has been nothing short of remarkable. As one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States, ONT has evolved into a full-service airport offering nonstop jet service to more than two dozen major airports across the U.S., Mexico, Central America, and Taiwan.
As the airport moves into its second decade of local ownership, this new monument will continue to serve as a powerful reminder of the airport’s bright future, while celebrating its deep ties to the community. Ontario International Airport is more than just an airport; it is a symbol of progress and the gateway to Southern California’s thriving travel and tourism sector.
A New Chapter for Ontario International Airport
The new monument sign at Ontario International Airport marks a significant milestone in the airport’s current development process. The monument stands as a testament to ONT’s expansion which reflects both local ownership and regional community pride. The airport’s facilities demonstrate its growth as an international gateway which serves both global and domestic travelers.
The new landmark will create a powerful educational experience which will establish Ontario International Airport as an essential component of the regional air transportation system.
