Celebrity Cruises is undertaking a major expansion into European river cruising, outlining a long-term plan that will significantly reshape its presence in the region. The company has confirmed an order for 10 additional river ships scheduled for delivery by 2031, a move that will double its river fleet to 20 vessels and firmly establish Celebrity River Cruises as a large-scale operator in the European market.
This expansion begins with the construction of Celebrity Compass, the brand’s first river ship, which is set to debut in 2027. The commencement of steel cutting marks a pivotal step in Celebrity’s entry into river cruising, transforming the project from a strategic initiative into an active shipbuilding program. The vessel will serve as the foundation for a broader fleet rollout planned over the remainder of the decade.
The decision to rapidly scale the river division follows an unusually strong market response. Celebrity’s initial river cruise offerings for 2027 sold out almost immediately after bookings opened, signaling demand well beyond initial forecasts. The swift uptake prompted the company to accelerate its expansion timeline and open additional seasons for sale earlier than planned.
As part of this accelerated growth, Celebrity River Cruises has launched bookings for its 2028 season, unveiling a substantially expanded schedule. The 2028 deployment will include more than 160 sailings calling at over 50 destinations throughout Europe. Compared with the inaugural 2027 season, this represents an increase of roughly 80 percent in destination coverage, underscoring the scale of the expansion. Five river ships are scheduled to operate during the season, allowing for broader geographic reach and increased itinerary variety.
Key European rivers will form the backbone of the expanded program. The Rhine and Danube are set to feature prominently, with itineraries incorporating a total of 24 ports. These routes are designed to offer a blend of major urban centers, historic river towns, and culturally significant regions, reflecting traveler demand for immersive, destination-focused travel. The itineraries also allow for flexibility in length and routing, appealing to a wide range of guest preferences.
Celebrity’s entry into river cruising marks a strategic diversification beyond its long-established ocean cruise operations. While the brand has built its reputation on premium ocean voyages, river cruising offers a complementary product focused on smaller vessels, closer proximity to destinations, and more time ashore. By expanding into this segment, Celebrity is broadening its appeal and creating additional opportunities for repeat guests to remain within the brand’s vacation portfolio.

The European river cruise sector has grown increasingly competitive in recent years, driven by sustained demand for culturally rich travel experiences and the introduction of new, modern vessels. Established river cruise brands have invested heavily in fleet renewal and itinerary expansion, raising expectations for onboard comfort, design, and service. Celebrity’s planned fleet size and rapid growth signal an intent to compete at scale while leveraging its brand recognition and operational expertise.
The new river ships are expected to be purpose-built to meet the specific requirements of European waterways, combining modern design with efficient use of space. While full details of the ship designs have not yet been released, the vessels are anticipated to feature contemporary accommodations, expansive viewing areas, and public spaces aligned with scenic cruising and destination immersion. The onboard experience is expected to reflect Celebrity’s premium positioning while adapting to the rhythms and expectations of river travel.

The phased delivery of 10 additional ships through 2031 provides flexibility for ongoing development. As the fleet grows, Celebrity will be able to introduce new itineraries, expand into additional rivers, and adjust deployment based on seasonal demand and regional trends. This long-term approach allows the brand to build its river operations steadily while maintaining consistency in product delivery.
Beyond the immediate expansion, the move into river cruising reflects broader shifts within the cruise industry, as brands seek to diversify offerings and capture travelers looking for more intimate and destination-driven experiences. River cruising continues to attract guests who value cultural engagement, scenic landscapes, and convenient access to historic city centers, making it a natural extension for premium cruise brands seeking growth beyond traditional ocean itineraries.
With construction underway, future seasons already open for booking, and a clear roadmap extending through the next decade, Celebrity River Cruises is positioning itself for sustained growth in Europe. The scale of the investment and the pace of expansion indicate a long-term commitment to the river cruise market, signaling that Celebrity intends to become a lasting and influential presence on Europe’s waterways.
