When using AI chatbots or generating images, the process appears smooth and effortless. However, behind this polished interface is a global network of developers who build the digital foundations. These developers are the unseen architects of the AI era, with India playing a central role, according to OpenUK CEO Amanda Brock.

Software developers contribute to open-source projects, which are essential for cloud platforms, mobile apps, and AI systems. This collaborative effort involves sharing code and tools across time zones. Platforms like GitHub serve as digital workshops where developers fix bugs and enhance models. This shared base is crucial for the digital economy’s stability.

India’s Role in Open Source Development

India has become a major player in open-source development. According to GitHub’s Octoverse 2025 report, India boasts over 21.9 million developers on the platform. In 2025 alone, more than 5 million new developers joined from India, making it the fastest-growing developer community globally.

This growth signifies a vast pool of talented individuals contributing to global projects that power AI systems and digital services worldwide. India is not just consuming technology but actively building its foundation. “We are your India’s second biggest collaborator in the UK,” Brock noted.

The Need for Institutional Support

Despite leading in contributor numbers, India still needs more globally dominant open-source projects and large-scale tech companies. Experts like Amanda Brock believe that while India has a wealth of talent, the next step involves institutional leadership and support to foster innovation.

As AI systems become more powerful, discussions shift from building to governing them. Regulation should be smart and targeted, especially in sensitive sectors like healthcare and finance, without stifling innovation. “AI should be a tool that serves humanity…humanity should not serve AI,” Brock emphasised.

The Importance of Collaboration

Open source lowers barriers, allowing students in New Delhi to contribute alongside engineers in London or San Francisco. This inclusivity makes it powerful. The world may celebrate AI advancements, but it’s India’s growing developer community that forms the essential base.

While India leads in contributors, there are concerns about the lack of projects or companies emerging from this base. The challenge for policymakers is to protect citizens while ensuring innovation remains dynamic and open.

The digital economy relies on this collaborative base built by millions worldwide. Without it, everything else could be unstable. The focus should remain on nurturing this foundation to ensure continued growth and innovation in technology.
