Joe Pernice Shares Aimee Mann Collab “Deep Into The Dawn”

Date:

A few months ago, the Pernice Brothers frontman Joe Pernice shared his cover of Aimee Mann’s Magnolia soundtrack classic “Save Me.” Now, Pernice has a new Aimee Mann duet of his own. This spring Pernice will release his new solo album Sunny, I Was Wrong. Pernice recorded the LP with a backing band that includes the Barenaked Ladies’ Jim Creeggan and the Sadies’ Mike Belitsky, and it’s got appearances from Rodney Crowell, Jimmy Webb, and Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake. Today, we hear what happens when Pernice and Mann get together.

Joe Pernice’s new song “Deep Into The Dawn” is a soft, ornate, lovely Aimee Mann duet. It follows lead single “The Black And The Blue,” and it shows a very different side of what Pernice can do. This track has a lot of the same restrained but ornamental quality that Mann brings to her own music, and the two singers’ voices contrast nicely with each other. Here’s what Pernice says about it:

Of all of the recordings I have ever made, this is my favorite. The musicians played beautifully, and what can I say about Aimee Mann’s singing? As I was writing the song, I had her voice in mind. I’ve said a lot already about her greatness as a songwriter, musician, and performer. She’s a legit hero of mine. Obviously, I was pretty stoked when she agreed to sing with me. And she sang perfectly. I’m so pleased with how the song turned out. I’m almost able to listen to it as if it were not mine. Almost.

Sunny, I Was Wrong is out 4/3 on New West.
