Grime MC Ghetts Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Fatal Hit-and-Run

Date:

Ghetts, the celebrated MC who helped bring grime to the forefront of British culture, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a hit-and-run that killed a student last October, the BBC reports. The artist born Justin Clarke-Samuel, 41, admitted to causing the death of Nepalese student Yubin Tamang in Ilford, London, by driving at 60mph in a 30mph zone. He pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving and causing death by dangerous driving in December.

Prosecutors said Ghetts had consumed alcohol on the night of the incident, adding that he ran several red lights and failed to stop after the crash. His car was identified by a damaged wing mirror casing on the road that police traced to his address.

Ghetts, also known for starring in the Netflix superhero series Supacell, told the court that he felt “extreme regret, shame, and remorse” about Tamang’s death, adding, “This may be the only chance that I get to apologise. It was truly an unintentional act on my part and I am so sincerely sorry for the suffering and emotional distress that I have caused.”
