An accused involved in hurling a country bomb on a police team that was escorting an accused a few days ago was killed in a police encounter in Mangalamedu police station limits in Perambalur district in the early hours on Tuesday (January 27, 2026).

A special team had picked up Alaguraja (30), alias Kotturaja, hailing from Madurai district, from Udhagamandalam in connection with the attack. Based on his “confession”, the team took him to a spot for the recovery of a weapon when the encounter took place.

According to police, Alaguraja attacked Sub Inspector Shankar with a weapon, causing injury to the latter. The Inspector opened one round of fire on Alaguraja in an act of defence. Alaguraja died on the way to the hospital.

The injured Sub Inspector was admitted to the Government Hospital, Perambalur. There were several cases against Alaguraja, police said. Six more persons have been detained in connection with the case.

On January 24, the police team was escorting a history sheeter Vellakali from Dindigul to Puzhal Central Prison when country bombs were lobbed by a gang near Perambalur causing injuries to three police personnel.
