Bordoloi quits Assam Congress

Assam Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from the Indian National Congress about 20 days before the April 9 assembly elections. His letter was sent to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, party officials said. Congress leaders in Delhi described the move as an internal dispute and rejected claims of outside orchestration.

The resignation letter was a one-line note addressed to Kharge. Bordoloi wrote, “With an overwhelming sense of sadness today, I hereby tender my resignation from all posts, privileges and the primary membership of the Indian National Congress.\” A copy of the letter is available with. The decision triggered swift talks by senior leaders.

Assam Congress resignation linked to internal dispute, leaders say

Bora said state party chief Gaurav Gogoi and AICC general secretary in-charge of Assam Jitendra Singh spoke with Bordoloi in the national capital. After the meeting, Singh described the issue as an internal matter. Singh said, \”The Congress blood runs in the veins of Bordoloi. We are members of one family and will remain so.\”

Singh also rejected suggestions that Bordoloi planned to move to the BJP. Singh said, \”No person will go to the BJP. Bhupen Borah recently went, and now he is running to secure a party ticket. No one even greets or invites to share the dais.\” Singh linked the comments to recent party exits.

The AICC leader referred to former state Congress president Borah leaving in February. Borah later joined the ruling party. Singh had met Borah soon after that resignation. Singh had then also said the leader was not leaving Congress. The earlier episode added to the scrutiny over Bordoloi’s move.

Gogoi criticised reports about the resignation and blamed a political campaign. Gogoi said, \”I condemn such news of Bordolois resignation. The chief minister, through the media, has been trying to malign him politically.\” Gogoi said the meeting also focused on planning for outreach ahead of elections.

Bordoloi held a key role in election preparations. Bordoloi was chairman of the manifesto committee for the Assembly polls. Bordoloi is a former state cabinet minister. Bordoloi also served two terms as MP from the Nagaon constituency. Bordoloi’s son Prateek is a Congress candidate from Margherita.

Assam Congress resignation comes as more leaders quit

Another APCC leader, Nabajyoti Talukdar, resigned earlier on Tuesday. Talukdar was described as a close aide of Bordoloi. A party source said Talukdar wanted a ticket from Guwahati Central. Talukdar stepped down after another member was chosen for that seat.

Congress currently has three Lok Sabha MPs from Assam. They are Gaurav Gogoi from Jorhat, Pradyut Bordoloi, and Rakibul Hussain from Dhubri. Bordoloi’s exit therefore affects the party’s small parliamentary group. The resignations also come at a sensitive time for state campaigning.

Assam Congress resignation follows warning over Lahorighat candidate

Bordoloi recently wrote to Jitendra Singh with a warning. Bordoloi said resignation was possible if Lahorighat MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar was renominated. Bordoloi alleged Nazar’s close aide Emdadul Islam was involved in an April 2025 attack. Bordoloi said Islam was later charge-sheeted by police.

Bordoloi also claimed Gogoi met Islam earlier this year at Gogoi’s residence. Lahorighat falls under the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. Bordoloi has deep roots in Margherita politics too. Bordoloi studied at Cotton College, now a university, and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Bordoloi was a four-time MLA from Margherita up to 2016. Bordoloi was linked with the state NSUI from student days. Congress leaders said discussions continued after the Delhi meeting. The party has not announced any replacement for Bordoloi’s organisational responsibilities, including manifesto-related work.
