The Central Crime Branch (CCB) has unearthed yet another illegal SIM box operation that was being used to route international calls as local calls, causing significant revenue loss to telecom companies.
However the accused, a native of Kerala, managed to slip away during the raid.
Acting on a complaint lodged by one of the service providers that multiuple SIMs were being used at one area, a police team raided a data centre operating out of a rented room in Electronics City Phase 2 on November 28.
The room where the unit was operating was found locked, but inside, the team discovered 28 SIM boxes, 1,193 SIM cards from various telecom operators, a laptop, three routers, a portable CCTV camera, and several documents. The value of the seized items was estimated to be ₹40 lakh.
Senior officers said the facility was being operated remotely and was suspected to be linked to cybercrime activities. “No one was found at the spot. We have identified the suspect, and efforts are on to trace him. There is a suspicion of financial fraud, and telecom companies have suffered considerable revenue losses,” a senior officer said.
The CCB was analysing the seized devices and data to uncover the wider network and the modus operandi. Further investigation is under way.
Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said, “This is the third such illegal unit raided by the city police this year.”
