meeting
with
US
Secretary
of
State
Marco
Rubio
following
the
Trump
administration’s
renewed
interest
in
acquiring
Greenland,
a
Danish
territory.
President
Donald
Trump
has
argued
that
controlling
the
world’s
largest
island
is
crucial
for
US
security
against
rising
threats
from
China
and
Russia
in
the
Arctic.
Rubio
informed
lawmakers
that
the
administration
aims
to
purchase
Greenland
rather
than
use
military
force.

Denmark and Greenland Seek US Talks on Greenland

Denmark
and
Greenland
are
pursuing
talks
with
US
Secretary
of
State
Marco
Rubio
about
the
US’s
interest
in
acquiring
Greenland.
This
follows
statements
from
the
Trump
administration
regarding
the
strategic
importance
of
the
island
amid
rising
Arctic
tensions.

The
Wall
Street
Journal
first
reported
Rubio’s
comments,
made
during
a
classified
briefing
on
Capitol
Hill.
On
Wednesday,
Rubio
mentioned
that
Trump
has
been
considering
acquiring
Greenland
since
his
first
term.
During
a
briefing
with
the
Senate
and
House,
lawmakers
questioned
both
the
operation
to
capture
former
Venezuelan
leader
Nicolás
Maduro
and
Trump’s
recent
remarks
about
Greenland.

US
Military
Option
Raises
Concerns

Tensions
with
NATO
members
increased
after
the
White
House
stated
that
“US
military
is
always
an
option.” Danish
Prime
Minister
Mette
Frederiksen
warned
that
a
US
takeover
could
end
NATO.
“The
Nordics
do
not
lightly
make
statements
like
this,”
said
Maria
Martisiute,
a
defence
analyst
at
the
European
Policy
Centre
think
tank.
She
noted
Trump’s
bombastic
language
threatens
another
ally
by
suggesting
control
or
annexation.

Leaders
from
France,
Germany,
Italy,
Poland,
Spain,
and
the
UK
joined
Frederiksen
in
affirming
that
the
mineral-rich
island
“belongs
to
its
people.” Danish
Foreign
Minister
Lars
Løkke
Rasmussen
and
Greenland’s
Vivian
Motzfeldt
have
requested
a
meeting
with
Rubio
soon.
Previous
attempts
for
a
meeting
were
unsuccessful.

Security
Strategy
Debate

Thomas
Crosbie,
an
associate
professor
at
the
Royal
Danish
Defence
College,
believes
an
American
takeover
wouldn’t
enhance
US
security
strategy.
“The
United
States
will
gain
no
advantage
if
its
flag
is
flying
in
Nuuk
versus
the
Greenlandic
flag,”
he
told
the
AP.
He
added
that
as
a
trusted
ally,
Denmark
would
provide
any
specific
security
access
needed
by
the
US.

Denmark’s
parliament
approved
a
bill
last
June
allowing
US
military
bases
on
Danish
soil.
This
expanded
a
2023
agreement
with
the
Biden
administration
granting
US
troops
broad
access
to
Danish
airbases.
Rasmussen
stated
Denmark
could
terminate
this
agreement
if
the
US
attempts
to
annex
Greenland.

Potential
Consequences
of
Annexation

Crosbie
suggested
that
an
American
annexation
could
erode
global
rule
of
law
and
norms
protecting
people
worldwide.
He
believes
the
US
wouldn’t
harm
locals
or
engage
with
Danish
troops.
“They
don’t
need
to
bring
any
firepower,”
Crosbie
said.
“They
could
just
direct
military
personnel
currently
there
to
drive
to
Nuuk’s
centre
and
say,
‘This
is
America
now.'”

French
Foreign
Minister
Jean-Noël
Barrot
spoke
with
Rubio
on
Tuesday,
who
dismissed
any
Venezuela-style
operation
in
Greenland.
Barrot
emphasised
NATO
membership
would
be
compromised
by
aggression
towards
another
member.
He
refused
to
engage
in
“fiction
diplomacy”
regarding
Trump’s
potential
claim
on
Greenland.

Political
Reactions

While
most
Republicans
support
Trump’s
statement,
Senators
Jeanne
Shaheen
and
Thom
Tillis
criticised
his
rhetoric.
“When
Denmark
and
Greenland
make
it
clear
that
Greenland
is
not
for
sale,
the
United
States
must
honour
its
treaty
obligations,”
they
stated.
They
stressed
respecting
Denmark’s
sovereignty
and
territorial
integrity
aligns
with
NATO’s
principles
of
self-determination.
