DigiCert launches locally hosted digital trust platform in India amid data sovereignty push

US-based company that provides digital certificates, DigiCert, on Thursday launched a locally hosted version of its DigiCert ONE platform in India, as businesses face increasing pressure to keep sensitive digital operations within the country.

The local deployment allows organisations in India to handle key security functions, such as managing digital certificates used to protect online communications, without sending data or processes overseas. This is intended to help companies comply with India’s growing data residency and cybersecurity requirements.

India has one of the world’s most demanding regulatory environments for digital operations, particularly in sectors such as banking, insurance, healthcare and telecommunications. Companies in these industries must comply with rules set by multiple regulators, including the Reserve Bank of India, the Securities and Exchange Board of India and the national cybersecurity body CERT-In.

By hosting the platform within India, DigiCert said companies could centralise security-related processes that are often spread across different systems, which may help reduce compliance complexity and improve system reliability.

“Investing in a local DigiCert ONE instance reflects our long-term commitment to India and enables customers to operate with the performance, compliance and confidence required from day one,” said Cook, DigiCert’s group vice president for Asia Pacific.

The move comes as governments around the world place greater emphasis on data sovereignty, a trend that has pushed global technology firms to build or lease infrastructure within national borders.

In India, regulators have steadily expanded rules requiring certain types of data and security functions to be handled locally, particularly for critical services.

DigiCert has expanded its operations in India over recent years. The company said nearly three-quarters of its engineering workforce is now based in and Pune, and that India is its largest employee base globally, with more than 350 staff.

The company added that it serves thousands of customers in India through a mix of direct sales and partners, and that its business in the country has grown significantly over the past year, driven by demand from sectors such as IT services, banking, e- and retail.

Anant Deshpande, DigiCert’s regional vice president for India and ASEAN, said hosting the platform locally could make it easier for customers and partners to meet regulatory and operational requirements.

“This local deployment simplifies adoption for both customers and partners,” he said.

The India launch follows similar local deployments by DigiCert in markets including Australia, Europe, Japan and the United States, showing a broader industry trend towards regional infrastructure to meet compliance and governance expectations.
