US President Donald Trump on March 17 played down the resignation of Joe Kent, saying the decision works in the administration’s favour as it presses ahead with its Iran policy.

Addressing reporters, Trump described Kent as “very weak on security” and suggested his departure removes a voice that did not align with the government’s current direction. The president indicated there was no concern within the White House about the sudden exit, framing it instead as consistent with a tougher national security stance.

Kent had earlier announced he was stepping down from his role at the National Counterterrorism Center, citing disagreement with the US military campaign in Iran. He said the ongoing conflict conflicted with his own assessment of security priorities and regional stability, prompting him to leave the post.
