The Yacharam police arrested two men near Ibrahimpatnam on Sunday evening after their car was involved in a dramatic attempt to evade a drunk driving check during which a sub-inspector was dragged on the bonnet and a family on a two-wheeler was injured.
The accused were identified as Srikar, 27, a driver by profession who was behind the wheel, and Nithin, 24, an MBA graduate. A breath analyser test later confirmed that Srikar had consumed alcohol, with their BAC levels above 100.
According to the police, the incident took place around 6 p.m. when a team, including Sub-Inspector Madhu, was conducting a drunk driving check at Yacharam. “When the car was signalled to stop, the driver allegedly accelerated. As SI Madhu attempted to block the vehicle, he climbed onto the bonnet, but the car continued to speed away, dragging him for nearly 500 metres,” said an officer from the Yacharam police.
While fleeing, and with the sub-inspector still on the bonnet, the car rammed into a two-wheeler. A woman sustained a fracture to her arm, while a man and a one-year-old child suffered minor injuries.
The sub-inspector jumped off when the car slowed down and escaped with minor injuries. Other police teams followed the vehicle and alerted the Ibrahimpatnam police, who set up an ambush and intercepted it after a chase of about 14 kilometres.
Both Srikar and Nithin were taken into custody near Ibrahimpatnam. SI Madhu’s condition was stated to be stable, and further investigation is under way.
