Four Assam police commandos were injured in an extremist attack in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district early Sunday (March 22, 2026) morning.

District officials said the assailants, suspected to be of a banned group, fired indiscriminately and lobbed several grenades at the commando camp at Jagun, close to the border with Arunachal Pradesh.

The commandos retaliated and the gunfight continued for about 30 minutes before the attackers slipped away. Three of the four injured sustained grievous injuries. Police said they were rushed to a hospital.

“We have launched an operation in coordination with other forces to find the attackers,” an official said.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, members of the Paresh Baruah-led faction of the banned United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent) carry out intermittent operations along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

Jagun is less than 50 km from the nearest point of Arunachal Pradesh’s border with Myanmar, where the ULFA(I) has its camps.
