As restaurant prices continue to climb, more Americans are rethinking where they pick up dinner. New data from Placer.ai shows that households earning between $100,000 and $125,000 spent less time at fast casual chains in the second half of 2025. That money now goes to value grocers like Trader Joe’s and Aldi, warehouse clubs, and food-forward convenience stores where the same dollars stretch further.

But for the people still grabbing a bowl or a burrito on the way home, the reason has little to do with the food itself. Recent Morning Consult data on fast-casual dining found that the dominant motivation is exhaustion. While fast-casual diners tend to be more optimistic than the general population, that confidence has been tested as broader consumer sentiment has declined over the past seven months.

When Americans are too tired to cook, they turn to fast casual

Forty percent of fast-casual visits begin with a familiar feeling: being too tired to cook at home, according to a Morning Consult report. That makes exhaustion the single largest entry point into the category, ahead of wanting something affordable and filling at roughly 35%. The appeal is the relief of not having to make one more decision.

Eighty percent of American workers say they feel stressed by financial pressure, the demands of daily life, and uncertainty about the future, per Aflac’s 2025-2026 WorkForces Report. The Morning Consult data show that 58% of fast-casual consumers are Gen Z or Millennials — generations squeezed between stagnant wages, rising costs, and not enough hours in the day. When the day already feels like too much, the last thing anyone wants is to figure out what’s for dinner.

Busy schedules are pushing Americans toward fast-casual takeout

Americans have less free time than they used to, and dinner has become one of the first things to forgo. Adults aged 35 to 44 average just 3.8 hours of leisure per day, the lowest of any age group, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2025 American Time Use Survey. Roughly a third of fast casual visits happen because someone is picking up dinner on the way home, the Morning Consult report found — a meal wedged into the commute rather than planned around it.

Eighty-one percent of people who order takeout or delivery say the ability to multitask is a key reason they do it, according to a January 2025 YouGov survey. Nearly 40% of fast casual consumers are parents, the Morning Consult data shows — people juggling pickups, homework, and bedtimes who need to eat while doing three other things. The value lies in the freedom to eat while catching up on a show, finishing work, or getting the kids settled.

GLP-1 medications are changing what diners order

Twelve percent of Americans are now taking GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, up from 6% in May 2024, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. They’re up against the same exhaustion and time constraints as everyone else — plus the mental load of eating differently. Every meal requires a calculation: how much protein, what portion size, and whether the food will sit well with a changed appetite.

The Morning Consult data reflects what GLP-1 users are already looking for: meals that are smaller, higher in protein, and easier to fit into a restricted diet. GLP-1 users need to know what they’re getting without having to do the math themselves.
