Barry Keoghan is wondering what’s in a name.
The Banshees of Inisherin actor has had the public curious about how to pronounce his Irish last name, so he was thrilled when BBC Radio 1 host Greg James actually pronounced it correctly as “Kee-oh-gan.”
“Every time I say it on the radio,” Greg began during Barry’s March 11 appearance on The Breakfast Show, “people are like, ‘It’s not Kee-OH-gan.’ I’m like, ‘It is!’”
Barry asked who might be spreading the incorrect pronunciation, with Greg joking it was “everyone.”
But according to Barry, “Until a Keoghan tells you it’s not how you say it, well then you know.”
For his part, Greg found himself particularly annoyed when folks would tell him not to “pronounce the -eogan,” exclaiming, “Yeah you do pronounce the ‘eogan!”
As for how the radio DJ remembered how to say Barry’s last name? Greg joked that after watching the end of 2023’s Saltburn—in which Barry went full frontal—Greg was “talking about Barry’s Ke-oh-gan for a long time.”
