US
President
Donald
Trump
defended
an
Immigration
and
Customs
Enforcement
officer
who
shot
and
killed
37-year-old
Renee
Nicole
Good
in
Minneapolis,
claiming
Good
was
responsible
because
she
allegedly
tried
to
“run
over” the
officer.
The
shooting,
captured
on
video,
happened
during
federal
immigration
operations
and
quickly
drew
national
attention,
protests,
and
sharp
political
disagreement
over
what
actually
occurred.

Speaking
to
reporters
hours
after
the
incident,
Trump
supported
the
use
of
force
when
asked
if
firing
into
a
moving
vehicle
was
acceptable.
Trump
told
The
New
York
Times,
“She
behaved
horribly.
And
then
she
ran
him
over.
She
didn’t
try
to
run
him
over.” Trump
later
screened
video
of
the
encounter,
while
also
noting
discomfort
with
the
violent
outcome.

Donald
Trump
defended
an
ICE
officer
who
shot
and
killed
Renee
Nicole
Good
in
Minneapolis,
claiming
she
tried
to
run
over
the
officer,
while
protests
erupted
and
political
disagreements
emerged;
officials
like
Kristi
Noem
and
JD
Vance
backed
the
officer,
while
others,
including
Tim
Walz,
called
for
investigation.

ICE
officer
shooting
sparks
protests
and
political
backlash

The
death
of
Renee
Nicole
Good,
also
known
as
Renee
Nicole
Macklin
Good,
led
to
protests
in
several
US
cities.
Demonstrators
criticised
the
broader
immigration
crackdown
carried
out
under
the
Trump
administration.
According
to
the
Associated
Press,
Wednesday’s
shooting
was
at
least
the
fifth
death
connected
to
these
latest
enforcement
actions
in
major
urban
areas.

During
the
video
screening,
Trump
appeared
to
acknowledge
the
severity
of
what
viewers
saw.
Before
the
footage
started,
Trump
said,
“With
all
of
it
being
said,
no,
I
don’t
like
that
happening.”
While
describing
the
confrontation,
Trump
called
it
violent
and
later
added,
“That
was
a
vicious
situation
that
took
place.”
Afterward,
Trump
observed,
“It’s
a
terrible
scene.
I
think
it’s
horrible
to
watch.
No,
I
hate
to
see
it.”

Video
details
and
accounts
in
ICE
officer
shooting

Clips
from
the
scene
showed
ICE
agents
walking
up
to
a
car
stopped
in
the
middle
of
a
street.
As
the
vehicle
began
moving
forward,
one
officer
pointed
a
gun
toward
the
driver.
At
least
two
gunshots
were
audible
in
the
footage.
The
car
then
appeared
to
veer
out
of
control
and
crashed
into
another
vehicle
parked
along
the
roadside.

Minneapolis
Police
Chief
Brian
O’Hara
outlined
what
local
officers
understood
about
the
sequence.
O’Hara
said
Good
sat
inside
her
vehicle
and
was
blocking
traffic
along
Portland
Avenue
when
a
federal
officer
approached
on
foot.
According
to
O’Hara,
“and
she
began
to
drive
off”.
O’Hara
said
that
at
this
moment,
the
ICE
officer
fired
the
fatal
shots.

Conflicting
official
narratives
around
ICE
officer
shooting

Federal
and
local
authorities
offered
clashing
stories
about
Good’s
actions
before
the
shooting.
Homeland
Security
Secretary
Kristi
Noem
alleged
that
Good
had
been
“stalking
and
impeding”
officers
for
much
of
the
day.
Noem
said
Good
attempted
to
“weaponise
her
vehicle”,
accusing
Good
of
trying
to
run
over
the
officer
and
labelling
the
incident
“domestic
terrorism”.

The
Minneapolis
City
Council
rejected
that
description
and
painted
a
different
picture
of
Good.
Council
members
said
she
was
“caring
for
her
neighbours”
when
the
ICE
officer
shot
and
killed
Good.
Minnesota
Governor
Tim
Walz
also
questioned
the
federal
account
and
promised
a
“full,
fair,
and
expeditious
investigation”
into
what
happened
on
Portland
Avenue.

US
Vice
President
JD
Vance
strongly
backed
the
ICE
officer
and
attacked
Good’s
motives.
Vance
referred
to
Renee
Nicole
Macklin
Good
as
a
“deranged
leftist”
who
tried
to
run
over
a
federal
officer.
On
social
media,
Vance
urged
Democrats
to
state
their
position
on
the
shooting,
arguing
that
the
officer
had
acted
to
protect
life
during
the
confrontation.

Every
congressional
democrat
and
every
democrat
who’s
running
for
president
should
be
asked
a
simple
question:Do
you
think
this
officer
was
wrong
in
defending
his
life
against
a
deranged
leftist
who
tried
to
run
him
over?These
people
are
going
to
try
to
arrest
our
law…—

Vance
insisted
that
additional
footage
backed
the
officer’s
account
of
the
ICE
officer
shooting.
Vance
said
the
officer
who
killed
Good
“discharged
his
weapon
in
self-defence”
and
that
“other
angles
of
the
video
show
the
woman
clearly
hit
the
officer
with
her
car
while
accelerating.”
Vance
also
posted
further
commentary,
arguing
that
online
critics
misunderstood
the
images.

This
is
preposterous.First
of
all,
she’s
not
waving
the
officers
through
and
has
no
right
to
do
so
even
if
she
were.
She
is
waving
another
car
through,
before
the
officers
approach
her
car.Second,
the
officers
are
not
randomly
searching
her,
they
are
approaching
her
vehicle…
