Jetstar has announced a major increase in capacity on its popular Canberra to Brisbane route, offering more than 19,000 new low-fare seats this year. This move is set to not only benefit Canberrans by providing more affordable travel options but also support the growth of tourism in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The airline is set to operate larger Airbus A321LR aircraft on the route from April to October, replacing the current A320s.

A New Era for the Canberra to Brisbane Route

Starting in April, Jetstar will upgrade its aircraft on the Canberra to Brisbane route, bringing the Airbus A321LR into operation for the first time at Canberra Airport. This larger, more efficient aircraft will have up to 52 additional seats per flight, increasing the total capacity on the route significantly. This marks a pivotal moment for the airline’s operations in the capital and provides more opportunities for residents to travel affordably.

The Airbus A321LR is known for its fuel efficiency and quieter operation, ensuring that passengers experience a smoother, more comfortable journey. This aircraft is equipped with modern features such as larger overhead storage bins, in-seat power for mobile devices, and seat-back device holders, making the flight experience more enjoyable for all.

More Affordable Travel for Canberrans

Jetstar’s decision to increase capacity on the Canberra to Brisbane route aligns with its ongoing commitment to providing affordable travel options for locals. With the introduction of the Airbus A321LR, the airline will be able to offer up to 18 return flights a week between Canberra and Brisbane. This is part of a broader network that includes flights to Melbourne and the Gold Coast, all of which serve as key domestic routes from the ACT.

The new aircraft will bring the total number of available seats on the Canberra to Brisbane route to over 350,000 annually. Since Jetstar introduced the three domestic routes from Canberra following the pandemic, it has carried over one million passengers in and out of the city, showing a significant demand for affordable air travel.

A Boost for Local Tourism and Hospitality

This increase in seat capacity is not only beneficial for residents seeking affordable travel but also plays a crucial role in boosting Canberra’s local economy. More flights between Canberra and Brisbane mean that more visitors from Queensland will have the opportunity to explore the nation’s capital. This influx of travellers is expected to support local tourism and hospitality businesses, with more tourists able to experience the diverse attractions Canberra has to offer.

The expansion of the route also aligns with the ACT Government’s tourism strategy, which aims to increase tourism demand from key markets like Queensland. As Andrew Barr, the ACT Chief Minister, mentioned, the added capacity is a fantastic development for travel affordability and demonstrates the airline’s confidence in Canberra’s growing tourism market.

Jetstar’s Competitive Edge in the Canberra Travel Market

Jetstar’s commitment to the Canberra market is also evident in its pricing strategy. To celebrate the increase in capacity, the airline is offering one-way fares from Canberra to Brisbane starting at just $129. Additionally, fares to Melbourne and the Gold Coast are available from as low as $81 and $93 respectively. These affordable fares make it easier for Canberrans to take a trip to South East Queensland or explore other parts of Australia, further enhancing the region’s connectivity.

This increase in frequency and affordability comes at a time when many are seeking budget-friendly travel options, and Jetstar’s ability to deliver such services positions it well within the competitive landscape of domestic air travel in Australia.

Canberra Airport’s Role in the Expansion

Stephen Byron, CEO of Canberra Airport, welcomed Jetstar’s capacity boost. He emphasized that Canberrans have a strong desire to travel to Brisbane, and the additional flights provide them with better value and flexibility. The increase in available seats will ensure that passengers have more options, whether they are flying for work, a weekend getaway, or to visit family in Queensland. This expansion is also expected to support local businesses by driving inbound tourism.

The new A321LR aircraft is expected to offer an enhanced experience for passengers. The upgrade will not only improve comfort but also help to keep fares competitive, providing passengers with a higher value flight experience on one of Canberra’s busiest routes.

Jetstar’s Continued Commitment to Canberra

Jetstar’s decision to increase capacity and introduce the Airbus A321LR into its Canberra to Brisbane operations reflects the airline’s commitment to expanding its network and providing customers with more affordable travel options. By responding to growing demand and improving the flight experience, Jetstar is setting a new standard for low-cost air travel from Canberra.

Conclusion

With the introduction of the Airbus A321LR on the Canberra to Brisbane route, Jetstar is offering more than 19,000 additional low-fare seats, giving Canberrans greater access to affordable travel while boosting local tourism and hospitality. As Jetstar continues to provide frequent, budget-friendly options, it is clear that the airline’s role in enhancing connectivity for both locals and visitors will have a lasting impact on the ACT’s tourism industry.
