Karnataka Rain: Bengaluru’s First Pre-Monsoon Showers Likely in Next 48 Hours; Thunderstorm Chances at 90–100%

Weather conditions are turning favourable for thunderstorms over Bengaluru, with rain likely to arrive in the city within the next 48 hours. Weather trackers monitoring atmospheric conditions say there is a 90-100% chance of thunderstorm development over or very close to Bengaluru, potentially bringing the season’s first pre-monsoon showers to parts of the city.

The rainfall is expected to occur during the afternoon or evening hours, when heat-driven instability typically triggers thunderstorm formation over interior Karnataka.

Thunderstorm Activity Already Seen in Parts of Karnataka

Even before Bengaluru receives rainfall, several parts of Karnataka have already begun witnessing thunderstorm activity. Weather observers reported intense storms near Davanagere on Sunday evening, accompanied by lightning and heavy rain bursts.

Videos shared by local observers indicated strong lightning strikes and short spells of heavy rainfall, suggesting that the atmosphere is becoming increasingly unstable across the region. Some weather trackers also noted that isolated storms can sometimes appear weak on radar but turn intense on the ground, especially during early pre-monsoon conditions.

Residents in parts of Bengaluru also reported a strong petrichor smell and lightning flashes in the distance, indicating developing convective activity nearby.

Why Thunderstorms Are Increasing Now

Meteorologists say March and April mark the beginning of the pre-monsoon convective season in Karnataka. As temperatures rise, the land heats rapidly during the day, building the energy required for thunderstorm clouds to develop.

April is typically the hottest month of the year in Bengaluru, and this heat buildup plays a major role in triggering afternoon and evening thunderstorms during April and May.

These storms are often isolated but intense, producing brief periods of heavy rainfall, lightning, gusty winds and occasionally small hail.

Bengaluru Storms Likely to Form Locally

Weather trackers note that the storm seen over Davanagere will not travel all the way to Bengaluru, but similar thunderstorms can develop locally over the city.

Such storms are commonly called “popup thunderstorms,” which form rapidly when atmospheric instability peaks. In some cases, microbursts – sudden strong downdrafts of wind – are also possible, particularly during isolated storm events.

Possible Relief From Rising Heat

If the predicted storms develop, Bengaluru could experience its first pre-monsoon rainfall of the season, offering temporary relief from the steadily increasing temperatures.

However, experts caution that pre-monsoon storms are usually short-lived, often lasting between 20 minutes and an hour, though they can bring intense rainfall and lightning.

With atmospheric conditions continuing to build across Karnataka, residents are advised to stay alert for sudden thunderstorms over the next two days, especially during the late afternoon and evening.
