Korea has unveiled a revolutionary next-generation high-speed train that is set to redefine the future of rail travel. With cutting-edge technology and innovative design, this new train is capable of reaching speeds of up to 370km/h, surpassing existing high-speed trains and setting new global standards. The groundbreaking features of the train include advanced aerodynamics, a powerful 560kW high-efficiency motor, and significant reductions in noise and vibration, all of which contribute to faster, smoother, and more energy-efficient journeys. This technological leap addresses key challenges in high-speed rail, making it not only faster but also more comfortable and environmentally sustainable. With these advancements, Korea is positioning itself as a global leader in the high-speed rail industry, paving the way for the future of fast, reliable, and sustainable rail travel.
Korea has officially completed the development of key technologies for the EMU-370, a revolutionary next-generation high-speed train designed to operate at speeds of up to 370km/h. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing commitment to advancing rail technology and solidifying its position as a leader in the global transportation industry.
The EMU-370, which boasts a design speed of 407km/h, has been developed through a comprehensive four-year research and development initiative spearheaded by the Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI). This national program has brought together seven public and private sector entities, including Hyundai Rotem, a prominent manufacturer of rolling stock. The project has attracted a combined investment of Won 22.5 billion (around $15.5 million), with financial backing from both the government and industry partners.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (Molit), the production of the EMU-370 is set to begin in 2026, with extensive testing slated for 2030. The train’s commercial operations are expected to start after 2031, potentially positioning it as one of the fastest high-speed trains globally, just behind China in terms of operational speed.
The EMU-370 is based on the KTX-Cheongryong (EMU-320), which currently has a maximum operating speed of 320km/h and a design speed of 352km/h. While the previous model was engineered to function effectively at speeds below 350km/h, the new EMU-370 addresses complex technical challenges associated with higher speeds, such as aerodynamic resistance, vibration, and noise reduction.
A major focus of the EMU-370 development was creating the necessary technologies to enable it to exceed these speed thresholds safely and efficiently. The project resulted in the creation of six key innovations. One of the standout features is the development of a high-efficiency 560kW traction motor. This motor delivers a 47.4% increase in output over the previous 380kW motor used in the KTX-Cheongryong. Each car in the EMU-370 will be powered by four 560kW motors, with a total of 24 motors distributed across an eight-car train.
In addition to the enhanced motors, the EMU-370’s design also incorporates significant aerodynamic improvements. The optimization of the train’s nose, bogies, and roof equipment has led to a 12.3% reduction in air resistance, which is crucial for high-speed operation. Moreover, advancements in the suspension system have reduced lateral vibrations by 33%, ensuring a smoother ride for passengers at higher speeds. To further enhance comfort, the interior noise levels have been reduced by approximately 2dB, thanks to the integration of sound-insulating composite materials and structural adjustments.
A key achievement of the project is the domestically produced air-tight doors, marking a milestone in Korea’s manufacturing capabilities for high-speed trains. Furthermore, the development of technical standards for trains operating at speeds up to 400km/h places Korea ahead of Europe, which is still in the process of establishing similar standards for ultra-high-speed rail.
The government has outlined plans to place an order for one or two EMU-370 trains from Hyundai Rotem by mid-2026. These units will undergo testing on the Pyeongtaek-Osong section of the country’s high-speed rail network. The introduction of the EMU-370 is expected to drastically reduce travel times between major cities, providing a competitive alternative to air travel. It is also anticipated to strengthen Korea’s foothold in the global high-speed rail export market, as demand for faster, more efficient rail systems continues to rise worldwide.
Looking to the future, the government is committed to advancing the development of next-generation trains that can reach speeds up to 400km/h. This ongoing focus on high-speed rail innovation will ensure that Korea remains at the forefront of global railway technology.
Korea has unveiled a revolutionary next-generation high-speed train that will redefine rail travel, featuring groundbreaking technology such as a 370km/h operating speed, advanced aerodynamics, and enhanced efficiency, setting new global standards for speed, comfort, and sustainability.
As the EMU-370 prepares to undergo production and testing, it represents a major leap forward for the nation’s transportation infrastructure. The successful deployment of the EMU-370 could redefine rail travel in Korea, reducing travel times and offering a glimpse into the future of high-speed rail globally.
