Martin Short made a bit of a faux pas at his Only Murders in the Building co-star Selena Gomez’s wedding to Benny Blanco: He accidentally cut the wedding cake before it was served.
Short discussed the incident during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, describing Gomez and Blanco’s Santa Barbara wedding as “perfect” and “beautiful.” At the reception, they sat Short with his Only Murders co-stars and producers (including Steve Martin and Paul Rudd) in an individual section in the back of the venue.

“There was a cake, a wedding cake by our section, but it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed that there was a wedding cake for each section in the back,” Short said. “So, after, you know, after a few hours, and they haven’t cut their wedding cake yet. And after a few hours, Steve [Martin] said he was going to leave. And I said, ‘Oh, wait.’ You know, maybe I’d had a cocktail. I don’t know.”

He continued: “So I said, ‘Oh, Steve, you can’t leave.’ I had a fork in my hand. ‘You can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake.’ And I cut the wedding cake one side, cut it the other, and then all the people in our group scream, ‘Marty!’ It was THE wedding cake. I tried to fix it with a fork. I tried. This is about an hour before it was to be presented. And so I turned to Paul Rudd and said, “So, do we just leave?’”
Kimmel then showed a photo of Gomez and Blanco’s botched cake, undoubtedly altered by Short’s fork. He didn’t do a terrible job fixing it, but let’s just say his attempt at damage control left some evidence behind. Watch Short’s full interview with Kimmel below.
