Meta Layoffs 2026: Up to 16,000 Employees Could Lose Jobs Amid Massive AI Spending
Business
Another wave of tech layoffs in 2026 could soon hit the industry as Meta Platforms is reportedly planning a major workforce reduction that could affect up to 20% of its employees, according to a Reuters report. If implemented, the layoffs could impact around 16,000 jobs out of Meta’s nearly 79,000 global workforce, and will be one of the largest job cuts in the company’s history.
Meta is currently ramping up spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, including expensive investments in data centres, advanced chips, and AI model training.
Meta layoffs linked to massive AI investments
According to reports, Meta’s capital expenditure on AI infrastructure could reach between $40 billion and $50 billion in 2026, as the company accelerates development of AI tools and services.
These investments are focused on building large-scale computing infrastructure required to train and run advanced AI systems. As AI technology expands across Meta’s platforms, the company is also looking to improve efficiency through AI-assisted workflows, which may reduce the need for certain roles.
Meta has reportedly described the circulating reports as “speculative”, though internal planning for workforce restructuring is believed to be underway. The spokesperson told Reuters.
Meta’s previous layoffs
This would not be the first major round of job cuts at Meta. In November 2022, the company announced layoffs affecting around 11,000 employees, representing roughly 13% of its workforce at the time. And then another round in 2023, when the company eliminated around 10,000 jobs as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s strategy called the “year of efficiency.”
If the reported layoffs take effect, the Meta layoffs 2026 could surpass previous job cuts and mark the largest workforce reduction in the company’s history.
AI Causing tech layoffs across the industry
Meta is not the only technology company cutting jobs as artificial intelligence is seeping in the industry. Across the global tech sector, companies are redirecting their spending toward AI infrastructure while reducing headcount in traditional roles.
As per the estimate, more than 45,000 tech jobs have already been cut globally in early 2026
Several major tech firms have announced layoffs this year, including:
In late January 2026, Amazon announced layoffs affecting around 16,000 employees as part of a major restructuring.
More recently, Australian software company Atlassian cut approximately 1,600 jobs on March 12th.
Payments and fintech firm Block also reduced its workforce by nearly 4,000 employees on March 9
Customer relationship management giant Salesforce laid off around 1,000 employees on February 9, as part of its cost-efficiency strategy.
Human capital management software provider Workday eliminated around 400 jobs on February 4, 2026, saying that the company had realigned priorities and adjusted its business.
Social media platform Pinterest also reduced its workforce by roughly 700 employees in January 2026
Logistics software provider WiseTech Global also announced layoffs affecting around 2,000 employees in early March 2026.
In addition, Meta itself earlier reduced around 1,500 jobs in its Reality Labs division, as the company redirected resources toward AI and other emerging technologies.
