HELP(2), War Child UK’s new star-studded benefit compilation, arrives in just a few weeks, but we’ve heard a few samples of it already: the Last Dinner Party’s “Let’s Do It Again!,” Arctic Monkeys’ big return “Opening Night,” the Damon Albarn/Grian Chatten/Kae Tempest collab “Flags,” and a snippet Cameron Winter’s “Warning.” Now, Pulp have shared their new song called “Begging For Change.”
Though Pulp didn’t contribute to the original HELP compilation in 1995, they do have a War Child connection: HELP was nominated for a Mercury Prize the same year that Pulp’s breakout Different Class did. Different Class took the honor, but Jarvis Cocker dedicated his speech to War Child and donated the prize money to the organization. “Thirty years ago we gave our Mercury Prize (and the prize money) to War Child,” he says in today’s press release. “This year we have given more. How much more? You’ll have to wait and see…” Listen to “Begging For Change” below.
Incidentally, 30 years ago today was also the day that Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker briefly crashed Michael Jackson’s performance onstage at the 1996 BRIT Awards. Police brought in Cocker for questioning on suspicion of having assaulting three of the children in Jackson’s performance, before quickly determining that Cocker wouldn’t face prosecution. He was onto something!
