Rajeev Gowda remanded in judicial custody, bail plea rejected

Date:

A local court in Sidlaghatta on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of Congress leader B.V. Rajeev Gowda and remanded him in judicial custody in connection with a case involving threats allegedly issued to the Sidlaghatta municipal Commissioner, Amrutha Gowda.

The court took a serious view of the allegations, observing that the offence was grave in nature. After hearing arguments, the judge dismissed the bail application and ordered judicial remand.

The police had sought five days of custodial interrogation, citing the need for further investigation. However, the court declined the request and instead sent the accused to judicial custody.

Rajeev Gowda was produced before the Sidlaghatta court following his arrest at the Kerala border on Monday. He had been on the run since January 14.

Meanwhile, the court granted bail Michael Joseph, who was named the second accused in the case.

Joseph, who was arrested for harbouring Rajeev Gowda at a farmhouse in Mangaluru, was produced before the court, following which the judge allowed his bail application after hearing arguments from both sides.
