Following videos of tourists and local residents thronging Thalakundha near Udhagamandalam after the onset of ground frost in the Nilgiris over the past few days, the Forest department has stopped visitors from trespassing into the area.
According to Forest department officials, tourism in the area has exploded over the past week, after a number of people began posting videos and pictures online of ground frost carpeting Thalakundha. The area serves as a catchment for the Kamaraj Sagar Dam.
However, after concerns were raised about the safety of tourists from both wildlife as well as other hazards, the Forest department released a statement on Tuesday (December 23, 2025), cautioning them against illegally venturing into the area. According to officials, Thalakundha, which falls under the purview of the Forest department, is home to a number of wildlife species.
“The area has a number of potential hazards, posing a risk to tourists. People unaware of the risks can potentially injure themselves or even drown, as there are very deep spots within the catchment area,” said an official, adding that clear warning signs have been placed, cautioning tourists against trespassing.
As people have failed to heed the warnings, the Forest department has now deputed personnel to monitor the area and prevent tourist entry, said officials.
