Temperatures in the Munnar hill station have once again plummeted to near sub-zero levels. The year’s lowest temperature of 0°C was recorded at Chundavurrai near Munnar on Friday morning, following a recording of 1°C at the same location on Thursday.
According to data from the United Planters Association of South India (UPASI) Tea Research Foundation, temperatures hit 1°C in Silent Valley on Friday, while Devikulam, Letchmi, Sevanmalai, and the UPASI headquarters in Nallathanni recorded 2°C.
The R&D centre in Mattupetty also witnessed a drop to 5°C. Officials expect temperatures to dip further into sub-zero levels in the coming days.
Munnar experienced an early winter this season, with temperatures dropping to -1°C in the second week of December accompanied by significant snowfall. The chilly weather triggered a massive surge in tourists to the hill station late last year.
Dileep Pottankulam, president of the Munnar Hotel and Resort Association, noted that the recent cold snap has led to a fresh wave of bookings. “We are currently receiving bookings from international travellers, as well as tourists from north India, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Additionally, many Malayali tourists are arriving to enjoy the weather,” said Mr. Pottankulam. “We expect this tourist surge to continue well into February,” he added.
