Olivia Rodrigo has made her adoration of The Cure pretty clear, and it seems frontman Robert Smith is just as big of a fan of Rodrigo.
In a new interview with British Vogue, Rodrigo discussed her massive Glastonbury 2025 headlining set, during which she was joined by Smith for covers of The Cure’s classic songs “Friday I’m in Love” and “Just Like Heaven.” When asked about his connection with Rodrigo, Smith wrote back to the interviewer confirming he was honored to join Rodrigo onstage and was already a big fan of her music.
“I bought Sour, and then Guts (both on CD!)” Smith wrote. “Although most of the songs on those two albums are not really ‘aimed at my demographic’(!), they are all so good that it is hard not to fall in love with them.” Since Glastonbury, Smith and Rodrigo have remained friends. “She calls me up quite a bit to talk about clothes and fashion – and we have enjoyed a couple of memorable nights in the studio together… I can’t wait to hear what she does next!”

In the same interview, Rodrigo also offered several windows into her forthcoming third album, saying the project contains both “London vibes” and “sad love songs”: “I realized all my favorite romantic love songs were beautiful because they had a tinge of fear or yearning in them,” she said. Other specific inspiration points came from Miranda and Steve’s relationship in Sex and the City, fate and spirituality, and how “love won’t fix you.” Read the full interview here.
Rodrigo was also so delighted by her 2025 Glastonbury set that she released the entirety of the performance, Smith cameo and all, as a live album titled Live From Glastonbury (A BBC Recording). That album arrived on December 5th last year. Meanwhile, Smith and The Cure are gearing up for their own summer festival jaunt, with headlining sets to come at Primavera Sound, Rock Werchter, Way Out West, and many more.
