Tourism Boost in Phuket Outpaces Infrastructure, Creating New Challenges
Phuket, being the prime destination in the tourism industry of Thailand, is also experiencing a tourism crisis because of the outgrowth of its tourism industry beyond the infrastructure capacity of the destination. The island’s long-running water-supply plans, including a proposal to bring water from the Cheow Lan Dam, have been discussed for decades but have yet to materialize. The lack of a stable water supply means that both locals and tourists are forced to deal with periodic water shortages, which detracts from the overall tourism experience.
The water-supply proposal, which was once estimated to cost billions of baht, has now ballooned into a project that could require tens of billions of baht to complete.
