National Youth Day is celebrated every year on January 12 in India to celebrate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, one of India’s greatest spiritual leaders and thinkers. National Youth Day was first celebrated in 1985, after the Government of India officially declared January 12th, which is Swami Vivekananda’s birthday, as the day in 1984. The main agenda behind this was to inspire the youth of India to follow his ideals to become responsible and empowered citizens.
Significance of National Youth Day
National Youth Day is celebrated to spread the teachings and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda, whose powerful words like “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached” continue to inspire millions even today.
Vivekananda always believed that youth are the backbone of India’s future. His ideas mainly focused on the importance of education for all. In his speeches, Vivekananda has always mentioned how crucial it is to develop inner strength, self-belief and confidence to face challenges in life.
Government Schemes and Initiatives for Youth
Over the years, the government has launched several initiatives to ensure that young Indians are not just beneficiaries of development but active partners in nation-building.
One of the major platforms is Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat), a digital initiative under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Launched in 2023, MY Bharat connects youth with opportunities for volunteering, leadership, skill development and experiential learning. As of late 2025, more than 2 crore youth have registered on the platform.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is also playing a very important role in shaping responsible youth. With over 39 lakh volunteers engaged annually, NSS promotes community service through outreach programmes & camps.
Skill development is another major focus area. Through initiatives such as the Skill India Mission, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and apprenticeship schemes, millions of young Indians have been trained in industry-relevant skills to improve employability.
Furthermore, to promote youth leadership, platforms like the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders’ Dialogue have been introduced by the government to allow young people to present ideas and solutions on national priorities directly to the concerned authorities.
Swami Vivekananda’s Legacy
Swami Vivekananda, born as Narendranath Datta in 1863, played a huge role in introducing Indian philosophy to the world. One of his most famous historic speeches at the 1893 Chicago Parliament of Religions brought global recognition to Indian spiritual thought.
In 1897, he founded the Ramakrishna Mission, which was mainly focused on working in the fields of education, healthcare, social service and other related areas. His writings, including Karma Yoga, have values that are highly relevant even for today’s youth.
